Paul et Marie vivent ensemble depuis 12 ans dans le quartier montréalais de Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (au Canada). Ils ont deux enfants, Virginie, 11 ans, et Gabriel, 9 ans. Paul a deux filles de son premier mariage: Catherine, 20 ans, qui prépare une carrière en administration, et Geneviève, 16 ans, féministe, championne en informatique et étudiante au secondaire. D'une précédente union, Marie a deux fils: Benoît, 19 ans, un rêveur qui se perd dans le monde des insectes, et Thomas, 15 ans, qui adore se mettre le nez dans les affaires des autres. Avec leurs six enfants, les Breton-Allard forment une famille heureuse, débordante d'imagination, et qui possède l'art de résoudre ses problèmes avec humour et de faire face aux petites misères de l'existence.

Rose was a brilliant student of Fine Arts. Then, she gave up everything for a "beautiful marriage". Now in her thirties, she is experiencing more and more difficulties in her life, which is both materially overprotected and difficult with her three children and an increasingly absent husband. She breaks down, cracks up and tries to imagine how she could broach the subject with her husband before it's too late. To her great amazement, it was Didier who, one evening before going to visit friends, announced that he was leaving and that he had already rented a small studio. After the shock, Rose goes to her father, an old Spanish anarchist, who gives her back the taste for values she thought she had lost.
